OUR STORY

The Beginning

Mystic Dreams Aviary started with a girl who had a passion for animals and the adventures that led her to raising wild birds.

The owner, Katherine, began her journey when she was about 5 years old. Wild, injured birds were found in her back yard, or the yards of neighbors, and she began rehabilitating them by researching each species and making makeshift hospital cages or feeding tubes for babies.

One particular bird that started her journey with doves was a wild baby Mourning Dove that had been misplaced from its nest by Bluejays. A neighbor brought a small, antique cage to her with the baby inside and when she declined taking care of it, the neighbor simply stated, "We know you will figure it out, your the only hope of it surviving." They left the baby bird in her care and after hours of research online, she was fairly confident that she could keep the baby alive. She fed it plain oatmeal with a spoon overnight and the next day, bought hand-raising bird formula. She cut little slits in a plastic straw to create a feeding "tube" for the baby to eat out of and began hand feeding it. As it got older and stronger, she introduced seeds and began teaching the baby to fly. She played videos of other Mourning Doves singing to teach it to coo, and once the baby was old enough, it was released back into the wild. The baby visited often and even brought friends, and late its mate.

After this, Katherine decided to start raising doves and had learned about Diamond Doves. She made it her mission to purchase her first pair and she began raising Diamond Doves. From that moment forward, she grew a love for the species and would raise them going forward in her adult life as well.
